Donizetti’s perennial hit comedy returns to Opera Birmingham’s stage for the first time in over a decade, featuring a cast of Alabama-based artists. This romantic comedy centers around a poor farmer in love with a beautiful woman who is clearly out of his league, as he plans to woo her with the help of a hilarious quack doctor and his magic “love potion.” Conductor Tyson Deaton will lead the musicians of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Birmingham Chorus

Opera Birmingham continues its successful chamber opera series with this intimate performance. Jake Heggie’s deeply moving opera explores the emotional shrapnel, secrets and hard truths that take place over three decades in the life of a Broadway diva, who has long ignored her (now adult) children as she pursues her career. Her daughter is struggling with a failing marriage, and her son is slowly losing his partner to AIDS. The beautiful score highlights the tangled emotions of this family as they come to grips with the secrets which have shaped their relationships.
